NEWSPEAK: BRITISH ART NOW
“If you fancy a day out this exhibition at The Saatchi Gallery, and surrounding Chelsea with all its cafes, shops, bars and restaurants, is 'Saatchi' good place to head.”

In 1997, Charles Saatchi grabbed the art world by its scrawny neck and shook it up with Sensation, an exhibition showing his collection of works by relatively unknown British artists like Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin, Rachel Whiteread et al. In doing so, Saatchi popped the cork on the YBAs and the art world intoxicated itself on the profits that flowed. Over a decade later, a more mature Saatchi has again focused his charms on British art. Newspeak features British artists Saatchi has recently added to his collection.
There are no unmade beds, dung smeared Madonnas, or Myra Hindleys in this exhibition. However, there is an impaled log, a levitating Madam Blavatsky, a stunningly seductive cellophane sculpture, and darkly humorous ‘hoodies’ in a corner.
And if the works by this new set of Saatchi’s favourites have not convinced you that the man knows his stuff, then Richard Wilson’s glistening, velvety and absolutely breathtaking work, 20:50 will. First shown by Saatchi in 1991 and now a permanent installation in the Saatchi Gallery, this work is still acutely contemporary and serves as a reminder that Saatchi really does know talent when he sees it.
From my always-made bed,
